Intersection

One was created on location. The American artist Richard Serra chose an intersection of four paths in a corner of the sculpture garden. In the middle of the intersection, he placed a huge cylinder of solid steel, man-sized, with a diameter of more than two metres and a weight of over 52 tons.

Strange experience

He placed the cylinder slightly tilted, whereby the centre of the intersection appears to become unbalanced and the observer undergoes a strange experience. Thus, with a sculptural intervention, he alters the self-evident nature of the existing spatial situation.

Visual medium

This work is not just about what the cylinder does with the space and the experience thereof, but also about mass, weight and balance. The landscape is an essential component of the work. Here, the landscape is a visual medium.
