Paint your own paradise

What would your ideal world look like? Be inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s Pink Peach Trees (Souvenir de Mauve) and the East Asian tradition of Peach Blossom Spring. This is a fable about a mythical place where you can briefly escape from the everyday world.

In this masterclass, Korean artist Kelly Jang takes you on a creative journey through the landscape. You will explore how a landscape can be not just a place, but also a space for imagination, memory and our ideas of paradise.

One breath, one stroke

The masterclass begins in the exhibition Van Gogh, All Our Paintings. Here you receive a short introduction to Van Gogh’s flowering peach trees and the ideas behind the masterclass. Then it’s your turn to get started. Through breathing, brush-and-ink exercises, and Kelly Jang's meditative method of ‘one breath, one stroke’, you will create trees, mountains, water and peach blossoms.

You then bring these elements together in your own imagined Peach Blossom Land, painted on traditional Korean paper (hanji) and presented as a hanging scroll. Take the time to slow down, breathe and paint. Discover how breathing, brushstrokes and imagination come together in a landscape that is entirely your own.

About the artist Kelly Jang

Kelly Jang is a Korean artist working between Seoul and Amsterdam. The Peach Blossom Spring – an imagined paradise, hidden in the landscape – has been a recurring theme in her artistic practice and research.

Alongside her artistic practice, Jang teaches Korean ink painting and East Asian art history. In her art and teaching, she develops a meditative approach to painting, in which breathing, concentration and brushstrokes are closely intertwined.
